Whole-life discipleship

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going to work and walking around life – and place it before God as an offering.
Romans 12:1 (The Message)

As I write this I am helping to staff the Scottish Bible Society exhibition stand at the Keswick Convention.

I am deeply challenged by the theme of the convention this year – the whole of life for Christ. Does this mean that my whole life is important to Jesus? And does it mean that I should give over every part of my life to him?

The reality of being a Christian means that I can walk with Jesus in all of life, everywhere I go every task I do spending every moment with and for him. The more I think about this the more excited I get!

A whole life of following and imitating Jesus. No compartmentalising of my life but whole life discipleship.

As Eugene Petersen puts it ‘our everyday ordinary life placed before God as an offering.’

So exciting and yet I have to admit challenging as well. What an opportunity to take Jesus beyond the walls of our churches, beyond the walls of our homes, offering God our going to work and walking around life. In fact offering him every part of our lives.

Romans 12:1

Living out the truth that whole life discipleship extends beyond Sundays and church activities into our everyday sleeping, eating, going to work and walking around life. In other words our whole life.

As I leave Keswick this is the challenge for me – offering God my everyday ordinary life as an offering to him.
