As it is World Book Day (March 3rd) we decided to celebrate the world’s best-selling book, The Bible!

At the Scottish Bible Society we want to ensure that the Word of God can be made available to everyone in their own heart language. This is a challenging task; there are 6,901 languages throughout the world and 4,015 of those languages do not yet have Scriptures – that’s 460 million speakers!

However, progress is being made! The Scottish Bible Society, as part of the United Bible Societies, make up the biggest translator, publisher and distributor of the Bible worldwide. 2014 saw a new record for the number of Scriptures translated as Bible Societies helped to complete the translations in 51 languages, spoken by more than 1.3 billion people.

These new translations have often launched despite facing significant challenges. In Nigeria, the Bura Bible, a first-time translation, was completed in December 2014 despite a bomb attack on the translation office in September. There were 4 new Bible translations launched in Nigeria, potentially giving 2.1 million people there access to the full Scriptures in their heart language for the first time!

However there is still a lot of work to be done as millions of people across the world do not have a copy of the Bible in their heart language. Please pray for the work of the United Bible Societies, that we may continue to bring the God’s Word to the lives of many more people.
