Today is the UBS Day of Prayer.

On 9th May 1946, in the aftermath of World War 2, 13 Bible Societies joined together to form the United Bible Societies.

Today, UBS is at work in over 200 countries and territories, and to mark it’s 72nd anniversary, a special prayer has been written.

This year’s prayer has a special focus on Bible translation. Please join with us as we pray for the translation work happening around the world and here in Scotland.

*Prayer by Dr Jutta Henner, Austrian Bible Society General Secretary and UBS Global Council member

Almighty and merciful God, we come to you with our hearts filled with gratitude.

We give you thanks for your Living Word, for Jesus Christ. Through his life, his suffering and his resurrection he brought life in all its fullness to all who believe in him. We give you thanks for your Word, the Bible. Through it you speak to us, and this encounter changes lives.

Almighty and merciful God, we come to you with our hearts filled with gratitude.

We give you thanks for all the Bible translations that have been completed over the decades through the ministry of United Bible Societies. We give you thanks for Scripture translations completed and published last year in 49 languages spoken by 580 million people.

Almighty and merciful God, we come to you with our hearts filled with gratitude.

We give you thanks for highly skilled, passionate Bible translators, for training opportunities and study tools. We give you thanks for faithful and generous donors supporting Bible translation, for Christians from all Churches embracing their Bible translations, growing in faith and showing solidarity with others.

Almighty and merciful God, we trust in you and ask you to guide and to bless us.

There are still faithful believers eagerly awaiting Scripture in their language. As Bible Societies we are committed to Bible translation as our core task and have a vision to reduce Bible poverty by over 50% by 2033. We have a vision to continue and initiate first Scripture translations in the next 10 years into more than 880 languages spoken by over 600 million people, to increase Scripture engagement through 200 new translations and revisions and to complete all current Bible translation projects.

Almighty and merciful God, we trust in you and ask you to guide and to bless us.

We trust in you as we approach the future with this large vision. We trust in you that you will touch people’s hearts and open doors so that everybody has access to the Bible in their preferred language.

Almighty and merciful God, we trust in you and ask you to guide and to bless us.

We ask you, bring us together in prayer, in vision and in our work. Remind us of brothers and sisters in need or suffering. Inspire us through your Word and your Holy Spirit. Unite us from around the globe, from all Churches, from all cultures and languages. Unite us in Your Word.

Almighty and merciful God, we trust in you and ask you to guide and to bless us.

Amen.
