Looking back, to look forward.

It is at the start of this new year that we reflect on the year gone by, and look ahead with excitement to what God has planned for us in 2020!

We at SBS are thankful to you, for your support in a year which included the growth of Bible-based Trauma Healing in the Scottish church, appeals for Bibles for countries like Syria, China & Angola, and the birth of BIBLE 2020, a global Bible-reading (and speaking-out) initiative through which we believe God will move in new and amazing ways.

Our staff reflect on what has been a great year full of God’s faithfulness.

Elaine Duncan, Chief Executive

2019 was a great year for the Bible mission both here in Scotland and around the world.

We partnered with SU Scotland on their Holidays programme to provide Bible-based resources to help young people engage with the books of Luke & Acts through Dear Theo, we launched a contemporary translation of the Gaelic New Testament both in print and digital format, and we were able to build relationships with churches and Christians around the country at various events.

Further afield, we were able to help Bible Societies in China, Syria, Laos, Cambodia, Ghana, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola fulfil their Bible mission by providing them with the financial means to give people copies of God’s Word in a format they can use and understand.

I, along with the team at Bible House, know that none of this would be possible without the prayerful and financial support of you. We truly are partners in this Bible mission, and I am excited to see what God has in store for us this year. Thank you for your support!

Bible-based Trauma Healing courses have been running here over the last two years.

I give thanks that during that time SBS has trained over 100 people from churches and communities throughout Scotland who have gone on to run 25 different groups from Isle of Lewis down to Ayr with 235 people taking part and sharing together around God’s Word.

I am so excited to see God’s power at work in 2020 as more people are trained and take this compassionate, Bible-based resource into their own communities.

By the end of 2019 we had 85 countries signed up to Bible 2020, with the ability to reach 70% of the worlds population, and the app available in 10 core languages, with over 1500 Bible versions in 1300 different languages. We paused and waited, knowing that we had done all we could and prayed that God would use what we had prepared.

On 1st January 2020, as the sun rose at Okitu Beach, Gisborne, our colleagues from the Bible Society New Zealand launched Bible 2020, surrounded by the local church they stood on the sand and read aloud John 1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Please pray for the Bible 2020 movement that people will join us in reading the Bible aloud, over their communities, towns and cities and the world would be changed by the power of God’s Word.
